One of the most difficult parts of making the decision to go abroad and do volunteer work, or even do it in a student’s home nation, is figuring out how to pay for it. This may come as a shock to some students because it does seem that the students cost should at least be covered, but most organizations that present the chances to volunteer have a lot of cost to cover running their program and can not afford to fund the volunteers on every step of the way. Students in both high school and college regularly volunteer, but doing so can be tricky until one understands the way that funding works.
For starters, most nations have some level of grants that are offered by the government of that nation. Two prime examples of countries that have government assistance available for student volunteers are the United States and the United Kingdom. Both of these nations have programs in place that can help students be able to locate opportunities that the government will help cover the cost of and thus reduce the amount the student needs to pay by a significant amount. This means that students have a much stronger chance to get their volunteer mission of choice funded in terms of travel, food, clothing and sometimes even insurance. These costs can mount quickly so applying for grants and scholarships really is key.
In many cases, a college will have a program that helps its students to go abroad to volunteer. Colleges and universities want well rounded students who have a variety of life experiences and will represent their alma mater well, so they are often very likely to provide funding. In the instance where the student’s own college does not offer such a program, many times a counselor at the school will be able to find sources of funding for the student so that they can do the work they want to overseas. This is a valuable asset and should be looked into by all students who would like to take some time to travel and do volunteer work that they can be proud of.
Remember, persistence above all else. Most of the programs that offer volunteer opportunities for students are very low cost and since the work is considered a very positive thing to be doing, a student could even go around their local area and ask for donations. Many times, adults are more than willing to contribute to such a positive, life affirming tradition when a student wants to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.
