In September, application forms are sent to all middle and high schools, Girl Scout councils, and county 4-H organizations. Applications are collected by these organizations on the last weekday in October and each organization names one Local Honoree for every 1,000 eligible students. From these winners, the top high school volunteer and the top middle school volunteer in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico are named State Honorees in early February and receive $1,000 and a silver medallion. Ten of these State Honorees are named America's top youth volunteers of the year by a National Selection Committee at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in May and receive an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, and a crystal trophy for their school. National Honorees also will have $25,000 of children's products donated in their names to needy children in their communities.
