Mission Statement

 

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

 

Volunteer Opportunties

 

Our biggest event of the year is right around the corner and it wouldn't be possible without our amazing volunteers. Join this tremendous group and have one of the best weekends of your lives. You can volunteer for a few hours or an entire day. To volunteer please complete the Summer Games Volunteer application form.

 

 

 

Many Volunteer Opportunities for students

 

Athlete Escorts - Under the direction of a Head Coach, will be assigned to an athlete for the day and will escort them to Staging areas, competition venues, lunch and Olympic Town.

 

Arts & Crafts - Work with athletes in the Arts & Crafts and games area of Olympic Town.

 

Volunteer Captains - Coordinate and oversee the on site Volunteer Registration Tents at each campus.

 

Media/Information Services - Distribute maps, schedules, press kits from Media/Information Tents

 

Food Services - Assist in the preparation and serving of lunch and dinner in the campus dining halls or lunch tents.

 

Aquatics Competition - Volunteers Needed to serve as timers, staging escorts, and officials at Aquatics Venue.

 

Healthy Athletes Village - Assist Eye, Foot, Teeth, and Fitness doctors and professionals in testing and checking out the athletes before and in between competitions

 

Opening Ceremonies - Serve as an usher for family members and athletes to help them find their seats for the show, also help is needed with setup and breakdown

 

* Photo ID is required (except for minors) at time of volunteer registration check-in.

Holiday Sports Classic

Come join our team of volunteers for the Special Olympics Connecticut 2006 Holiday Sports Classic. The 2006 Holiday Sports Classic will be held Saturday, November 18th and Sunday, November 19th with venues in New Haven, Milford, Hamden, and Straford. Athletes will be competing in one of the following events: Basketball, Bowling, Powerlifting, or Volleyball. Please contact Sarah Dickinson, Volunteer Coordinator at 203.230.1201 x 224 or by e-mail at sarahd@soct.org for directions to specific venues. All volunteers must check-in at the Volunteer Registration area and present a photo I.D. at the time of check-in.

Directions:

From I-91 South, Take exit 10 (Hamden-Route 40.)Take the first exit off the connector (Exit 1.) Take a right off the exit ramp. Take a right at the light onto State Street (Route 5 South.)Follow for about 2 miles, you will pass a VW dealership on the right. We are 1/2 mile on the right in Ed-Mor Park. SOCT is the last door on your right. I-95 North/South to I-91 North Take exit 5- State Street. Go straight off of exit. Follow for 4-5 miles. Ed-Mor Park is on your left. SOCT is the last door on your right.
