Youth Volunteering, Giving

Why Volunteer?

Many times, young people think about volunteering or helping a cause they believe in, but feel they are too young to be considered. Some think they don’t have enough time, such as an hour or two over weekends.

Volunteering offers you a chance to work to your level of competency, not your age. Most agencies are very adaptive to different time constraints. Some people even volunteer from home by using their computers.

Ten Good Reasons to Volunteer

http://youth.fdncenter.org/youth_getinvolved.html

  • Show that you can be responsible
  • Make a difference
  • Gain experience
  • Meet new friends
  • See new places
  • Set an example
  • Educate others about causes you care about
  • Have fun
  • Explore career options

Ways to Get Involved:

1) Determine how you want to volunteer. There are three basic ways to volunteer:

  • Volunteer as part of a youth group through your school, church, Scouts, Camp Fire, or other group. This gives you the opportunity to be part of a group project and to make new friends while doing something worthwhile for your community.
  • Volunteer with your family.
  • Volunteer on your own or with a friend

2) Decide what kind of organizations you’d like to help.

3) We'll soon have an interactive volunteer match feature on this website to help you a volunteer opportunity.  In the meantime,  LINK here for a list of some of the Connecticut non-profits with youth volunteer programs.

Volunteer Ideas for High School Students:

  • Have a food drive and/or clothing drive and donate to local pantries and clothes closets serving the needy.
  • Take on a "community need" project such as cleaning up a park or helping a senior with yard work or cleaning a basement. Identify a need and come up with a creative solution.
  • Tutor or mentor a younger child.
  • Organize a musical instrument drive and donate the instruments to a school who needs them.
  • Help agencies with paperwork, mailings, phone calls, clean up, etc.
